On March 11, 2011, the Minami Sanriku region of Northern Miyagi Prefecture was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the ensuing tsunamis.  70% of the town’s buildings were destroyed.

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, Harvard students organized the Harvard for Japan initiative to spread awareness of the effects of the disaster and to help the affected regions.  Events included fundraising drives, benefit concerts, and panel discussions featuring faculty from across the university.

A multi-disciplinary team of students and faculty from Miyagi University, Keio University and Harvard University have come together to work for the reconstruction initiative of the town of Minami Sanriku. Within the longer term collaboration between Miyagi University and Minami Sanriku-cho, this team hopes to propose and implement several smaller scale projects this summer and continue research towards longer term strategic planning.
